Debunking Cambridge Myths
This page debunks reasons you may be afraid of applying to Cambridge. Please note that this website is written and run by students (not the university or Magdalene)!"It's too expensive"
It's actually one of the cheapest universities in the UK! You can learn more about why Cambridge (and Magdalene in particular) is so affordable here: Affording University.
"I won't get in"
Unfortunately, there are always more applicants than Cambridge can accommodate. This means that there are always candidates who deserve a place, but sadly do not get one. That said, you definitely won't get in if you don't apply! Especially if your predicted grades are similar to the specific requirement for your course, you have probably underestimated your capabilities! You can apply to up to five universities on UCAS, so it's unlikely that applying to Cambridge will leave you without a good offer elsewhere.
"Even if I get in, I don't deserve to be there"
Most people think this at some point! The application process to Cambridge is very rigorous, so no one gets in unless they deserve to be there...
"I won't fit in"
There are many people at Cambridge from many backgrounds, so almost everyone settles easily. In the unlikely event that Cambridge doesn’t feel like the right fit for you, there is also lots of support available.
"They work too hard"
There is no denying that people at Cambridge work very hard. The terms are very short (only 7/8 weeks long) and are packed full of lectures, classes and supervisions (a small class with only one or two students). Because the terms are so short, there is lots of time for rest and recuperation throughout the year.
Cambridge students play hard too! Sometimes people think that Cambridge students spend all day in the library or their room working. This is not true. Students take part in a wide range of societies and activities, from football to board games.
"Oxford is better"
You can only apply to O*ford or Cambridge (unless you are an organ scholar). Cambridge is better for obvious reasons...
