Magdalene College JCR

Why Magdalene?

There are a number of reasons why people choose to apply to Magdalene. This page provides some of the most common ones. The Alternative Prospectus provides more detail about life at Magdalene. Please note that this website is written and run by students (not the university or Magdalene)!

An Old College

Magdalene is one of the oldest colleges in Cambridge. It was founded in 1428.

Because the college is old, it has some of the prettiest buildings in Cambridge, such as the First Court and the Pepys' Building. The college tries to make these buildings as accessible as possible (e.g. with ramps).

The college's age also means that it is in a central location. Everything you need is within walking distance, although many students choose to bring a bike. Because Magdalene is on the other side of the river to the other old colleges, it is not flooded with tourists!

A Small College

Magdalene is a relatively small college. There are around 100 undergraduates in each year. This means that everyone gets to know everyone!

The Best Library!

Magdalene student library (known as the 'New Library') was built in 2021. It's the prettiest modern building in the whole of Cambridge, winning the UK's top architecture prize (the Stirling Prize). Magdalene's library is open 24/7. There are a variety of different working spaces and there are always seats available! It has most books needed for each course; other books can be found in other libraries across Cambridge, and the librarians are always willing to acquire new books if it helps students. Like all college libraries, Magdalene's is only available to Magdalene students.

You can learn more about the library here: The New Library.

Free Punts!

Magdalene is the college with the longest river frontage in Cambridge.

The JCR funds a punt, which undergraduate students are able to borrow for free via the Porters' Lodge.

Very Affordable

Magdalene is one of the most affordable colleges in Cambridge. Meals in the canteen cost as low as £2.50! Rents in 2025–2026 start from £4317.60 per year. Students with a household income below a certain level receive up to £2000 per year from Magdalene to help with the cost of their studies. This money does not have to be repaid!

May Ball

Magdalene has one of the most prestigious May Balls in Cambridge. A May Ball is a big celebration at the end of the academic year. Magdalene's is held every other year. It's the only May Ball to have a compulsory white-tie dress code. Like most May Balls, it is expensive, but financial support is available.
